Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are an ideal option for people who live in milder climates where heavy-duty heating and cooling equipment is not so necessary.  The coastal areas of Southern California are a great example of a climate that is perfect for a heat pump system.  A properly installed and maintained heat pump offers an energy-efficient alternative to the standard furnace and air conditioner, so it can save you a lot of money.  Heat pump systems use electricity to move heat from cool spaces into warm spaces, just a like a refrigerator, so when it’s cold outside, the pump pulls heat in from outdoors and when it’s hot outside, the pump pushes the heat out.

Air-source heat pumps are the most common variety.  They move heat between the house and the outside air and they can even save you money on your electric bill by trimming electricity usage by as much as 30 to 40 percent, but they aren’t good for colder climates.  If you have air ducts in your home, you may also consider mini-split heat pumps or reverse cycle chillers.   The most efficient heat pump system is the geothermal type, though.  The cost of installation may be higher, but the operating costs are lower due to relatively constant ground or water temperatures.  The newest variety on the market is the absorption heat pump, which uses heat from a wide range of sources to produce energy.  Regardless of which type of pump you are considering, all will have an adjustable heat pump thermostat to easily regulate temperature.

There are many factors to consider before deciding to invest in a heat pump installation for your home.  The heat pump prices will vary depending on the type of unit you install, but some units might be more energy efficient so they can save you more money in the end.  And if you maintain the system well, you will rarely need to worry about heat pump repair.  The knowledgeable professionals at American Air Conditioning & Heating can explain all the options and help with your regular maintenance after the heat pump installation.
