As the temperature is hovering a bit lower in the Los Angeles valley this time of year, it’s wise to ensure that your furnace is properly functioning. One initial step in the right direction is ensuring that you can recognize large problems or even when something is functioning improperly. At that point, simply put in a call to American Air or call us before to schedule regular updates and avoid mishaps altogether!

To begin evaluating your furnace/heating system functionality, begin with some simple working knowledge.

  • Remember that your furnace continually brings in cold air and acts as a filter
  • This filtered air is dispersed throughout your home
  • After cooling, this air is recycled throughout the home
  • The process begins again

With this knowledge, you can begin to evaluate at which point in the process an error (if any) is occurring.

If your unit is cycling and you’re noticing when air is being both taken in and produced, but the air is not warm, always double check the internal heat pump switch and the thermostat. Turn the heat up to test the unit, and also check the circuit breaker and repair any circuits or replace breakers if necessary. Also, ensure that you check your pilot light if using a gas heating system.

If the heater is producing heat, but a disproportionate amount, the make sure to check the filters. Often times filters that have become progressively dirtier can restrict the airflow on your unit. If your filters appear dirty, call an American Air technician as soon as possible to evaluate them and potentially replace them for you.
