Optimal Furnace Operation– Safety Tips

Heating systems or furnaces are manufactured to last 12 to 15 years. Coupled with timely service and maintenance, you’re essentially getting a good deal of “bang for the buck” from your heating system.

It’s always a good practice to take into account some safety tips while maintaining your furnace over the years:

  • Before beginning any sort of maintenance or service on your system, see that the power source to your system is completely disconnected. Trip the circuit breaker that’s found at the main electrical entrance panel and proceed to remove the fuse that governs power to the unit. You might be unsure so as to which circuit your heating system is on; in that case, remove the main fuse or trip the main circuit breaker. This will of course, cut off power to the entire house.
  • When you turn on your system, and get a tripped circuit or blown fuse, there is an issue present in your electrical system. This is where you phone for professional assistance.
  • Should you detect a gas odor (if it’s a gas heating system), DO NOT attempt to shut off the gas supply or switch any lights on/off. Vacate the house immediately, call your local fire or gas department and report a leak. Do not go back inside until help arrives.
  • In order to keep your system grinding smoothly each season, have it serviced at least once a year by a certified technician or professional. The end of the heating season is a good time to have it serviced. You might even get away with a discount and service is usually prompt. A good idea is to also to get your air conditioner checked up in the process.
  • The heat source can be a complex part of your system. Unfortunately, this is also the part that’s most likely to suffer, in the event of any ignorance or carelessness on your part. If your heat source is on the verge of conking out, you’re looking at a potential distribution problem as well; give it regular attention to avoid all such headache-inducing situations.
  • Dirt does not sit well in any mechanical or electrical component. When it comes to furnaces, fuel can go to waste and efficiency is going to inevitably suffer. Keep in mind, your furnace needs lubrication and belt adjustment from time to time. Refer to the instructions manual for details.

There you have it. Simple steps that ensure you get the most mileage from your furnace. Happy heating!
